 The application and recommendation forms must be submitted no later than Friday, April 2, 2021.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.  All information is kept in strict confidence.

General Information

  • Applicant must meet criteria for membership at CFCU and have or open a CFCU membership savings account in his/her name before Friday, April 2, 2021.
  • Applicant must live in Tompkins, Cortland, Ontario, Cayuga, or Seneca County.
  • Applicant must be graduating from high school or earning a GED in spring 2021.
  • Applicant may apply for the Community Service Award and a Stringham Scholarship.
  • Applicant must have demonstrated evidence of service to the community by completing at least 75 unpaid volunteer hours from the summer after his/her sophomore year through his/her senior year.

    Community service hours could include, but are not limited to, volunteering with non-profits (e.g. United Way, SPCA, Catholic Charities, food pantries, etc.), developing a project that betters the community (e.g. Eagle Scouts), or other volunteerism that gives back to members of the community.
  • Applicant must submit recommendation form(s) from volunteer/community service supervisor(s) verifying completion of at least 75 unpaid volunteer hours.
  • CFCU employees, members of the Board of Directors, members of the Supervisory Committee, members of the Education Committee, and their immediate family members are not eligible for consideration.


Amount and Terms of the Award

  • $3,000 will be awarded to two (2) students, each consisting of one (1) grant for $1,500.
  • Awards are for one year only and are not renewable.
  • Award monies may be used at the recipients’ discretion.
  • Disbursements will be paid directly to the recipient’s CFCU account on or after July 1, 2021. 


The Education Committee will score applications based on the weighted categories below.  The amounts listed next to each category determine the percentage of each category’s value.

  • Community Impact of Volunteerism - 30%
  • Volunteer Hours - 25%
  • Short Answer Questions - 20%
  • Recommendation Form(s) - 17.5%
  • High School Activities / Work Experience - 5%
  • Length of time applicant has been a member of CFCU - 2.5%

  • Applicants who have not opened a CFCU account in his/her name by Friday, April 2, 2021 will not be considered.
  • Award Decisions will be made by May 28, 2021.
  • Applicants will be notified of their status shortly thereafter.
